CHENNAI: Expressing concern at the ongoing boycott of court proceedings in various districts over amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has urged advocates to end the agitation. Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, BCT Chairman K. Chandramohan requested advocates to return to courts, pointing out that most of the objectionable provisions in the amended legislation had been withheld by the Central Government. The present format of the amended Code will have only a limited impact on lawyers and the general public. Also, the Bar Council of India (BCI) is making efforts to address the problem, the Chairman said. Mr. Chandramohan said advocates practising in mofussil had been "misinformed" on the issue. He called upon lawyers in Madurai not to go ahead with their strike plan. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court Advocates Association convened a general body meeting to discuss the issue. According to its president, R.C. Paul Kanagaraj, the meeting resolved to constitute a seven-member committee, headed by senior advocate V. Gopinath to study the impact of the amended Code. Based on the committee's report the MHAA would decide its future course of action.
