IT return receipt counters

They will function from July 28 to 31, including on Saturday and Sunday

CHENNAI: With the July 31 deadline nearing for filing Income Tax returns, the Income Tax department has announced setting up of 31 special return receipt counters at "Aayakar Bhavan," besides 181 designated post offices in Tamil Nadu.

Santosh Datta, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai, told presspersons that this year, returns for salaried class would be accepted in 16 designated post offices in Chennai. The special counters at the IT offices would function from July 28 to 31, including on Saturday and Sunday. There would be help desks to provide answers to general queries and make available return forms. The counters would function between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Making it clear that return forms without Permanent Account Number (PAN) would not be accepted, Mr. Datta said that in the designated post offices, the assesses would have to fill forms in duplicate, submit one copy in an unsealed envelope (10 x 12) without folding the return. On the envelope, they should write PAN, the name of the taxpayer and the address, the assessment year and the ward/circle where assessed. The post offices would give a duly stamped acknowledgement in the second copy. The web site can be accessed at incometaxindia.gov.in.

Responding to the strike call given by the Joint Council of Action, members of the Income Tax Employees Federation, Tamil Nadu Circle, and the IT Gazetted Officers Association, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, joined the agitation.
