MANGALORE: In spite of heavy rains, Dakshina Kannada district is facing acute water shortage since December. Zilla panchayat president, Mamta Gatti said all Government officials and elected representatives should take this matter seriously and take steps to rectify the situation.
Rainwater harvesting
She was speaking after inaugurating a rainwater-harvesting workshop held at the zilla panchayat office here on Monday. Shiva Kumar, principal investigator, rainwater harvesting division of Karnataka State Council of Science and Technology, said that if rainwater harvesting was carried out properly eight lakh litres of water could be collected with 4,000mm of rainfall that the region receives. This would meet the estimated average water requirements of a family in a year pegged at 11 lakh litres. Even in low rainfall areas like Chitradurga that receives about 400 mm of water annually, 80,000 litres of water can be collected.
Model villages
To provide people with information on rain water harvesting rainwater-harvesting models had been set up in model villages in all the 176 taluks in the State, he said.
