ASBESTOS HITCH: The fisherwomen, who sell fish, point out that the heat generated by the asbestos sheets has become unbearable for them and their customers.
MANGALORE: The fish market near the State Bank Circle here is covered with asbestos sheets just before the monsoons. The fisherwomen, who sell fish, point out the heat has become unbearable for them and their customers. The Mangalore City Corporation manages the market yard and collects Rs. 8 from the each fisherwoman for one entry and about 600 fisherwomen utilise this facility. Their association has asked the corporation to remove the asbestos sheets and replace them with heat resistant corrugated sheets so that the fish would not become stale owing to the heat. According to them the height of the roof is less than 10 feet. The heat generated from the roof is trapped inside the market yard for a long time, the association has said.
