CHENNAI: Saplings of different types and sizes welcome visitors at the Forest Department's nursery at G block, Anna Nagar. The nursery has 19,000 saplings - a majority of them over two metres tall, ready to be planted along the Chennai - Bangalore national highway. The saplings are now almost a year old, Forest department officials say.

Ashish Srivastava, Wildlife Warden, Chennai, said the department would plant them on a 32-km stretch from Nerkundram by-pass up to Sunguvar Chatram by-pass. The saplings would be regularly watered and protected by using thorn fences around.

Poovarasu, Neer Marudhu, Naaval, Iluppai, Pungan, Vembu, Aatru Poovarasu, Kadasu, Nagalingam, Manjal Arali, Kalyana Murungai, and Yezhilai Paalai, are some of the types raised at the nursery. He said another 10,000 saplings are now ready at the department's nursery at Velachery. This is meant for free supply to educational institutions and hospitals in the city and suburbs. The Wildlife Warden's office number is 24321471.
