Hyderabad: The workers heave a sigh of relief as yet another steel plate is rolled into a pipe. There is a sense of jubilation among the men as the Phase II of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project (KDWSP) gets into the final stage.

The pipe manufacturing unit at Gungal presents a scene of hectic activity as the last of the plates go through the process of bending, welding, testing and inlining before they are transported to the site.

The pipe-laying work from Kodandapur to Sahebnagar -- a distance of 110 km -- is nearing completion. Pipes for just 37 km remain to be laid and this is expected to be completed by October 15.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy will commission the Rs. 1,082-crore project which will bring another 90 mgd of water to the State capital.

    Distribution lines

Though the system is in place, the city will not get the 90 mgd of water from the Phase II immediately. The internal distribution lines need to be improved first before the full quantum of water could be drawn. To store the additional water seven reservoirs on south of Musi and seven on its north are proposed. The reservoirs with a capacity of 100 ml would be ready within six to nine months.

Media persons, who visited the project site on Tuesday, saw the pipe-laying work going on at a brisk pace at 24 differing spots from Gungal to Kodandapur. Two master balancing reservoirs of 22.5 ml capacity each are ready at Gungal.

Pump houses and reservoirs at Godakondla and Nasarlapally are also completed. Only the work of the pump house and reservoir at Kodandapur is progressing at a tardy pace as the work was allotted recently.

"We have acquired all the steel required for the project and it will be commissioned at any cost on October 15," said V. Jambul Reddy, Director (Technical), HMWSSB.

He said the 44-km long ring main connecting Sahebnagar-Prashasang Nagar and Lingampally would be completed by August. This would ease the water problem in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet and Alwal areas.

The Sahebnagar-Marredapally ring main which would augment water supply in Secunderabad and surrounding municipalities would be completed by January next.

The Chilkalguda line is ready to be charged by July end and this would enable draw of another 10 mgd of water from the Phase I of KDWSP.

At present, only 80 mgd is being drawn. With completion of the Phase II, drinking water supply to the city would touch 326 mgd, Mr. Jumbul Reddy said.
