Police patrol nabs notorious thief

Jewellery, cell phones recovered from `Market' Suresh

CHENNAI: `Market' Suresh alias Suresh (28) of Kamarajar Colony, Kodambakkam has been arrested by a special team and stolen properties valued at Rs 1.25 lakh including 20 sovereigns of jewellery, cellphones, wrist watches recovered following the arrest.

Police said that following complaints of theft, house breaking and waylaying reported in Ashok Nagar, Rengarajapuram, West Mambalam, Vasudevapuram, K.K. Nagar, Vanniar Street among other areas, a special team was formed.

On Monday, the special team, on patrol duty in the area, swiftly nabbed the accused, when James (40) of Vadapalani was robbed of his gold ring and cash.

Suresh was involved in several cases of house breaking and robbery, police said. Based on his confession, police also recovered stolen properties valued at Rs 1.25 lakh. The accused has been remanded to custody.

Audit firm staff held

The City Crime Branch (CCB) police has arrested Murugan (35) of Peerkaranai on charges of misappropriation of office funds of Rs. five lakh. Police said the accused, employed by an audit firm in T. Nagar, used to remit cash received towards payment of annual returns from assessees with the Income-Tax department. However, he had been siphoning off the money. Murugan has been remanded to custody, police added.

Students commit suicide

An 18-year-old college girl and a 15-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging in two separate incidents on Monday. Police said the girl was living with her mother in J.J. Nagar. Her father was employed abroad.

She took the extreme step after her mother admonished her for not performing some domestic chores. The boy, identified as Yuvaraj of K.K. Nagar, studying in a school in Virugambakkam, hung himself after his father had scolded him. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
