Chennai:
A group of vendors, mostly women, are doing the rounds in Chennai selling cameras they claim are imported from Japan and China. Over the last week, these vendors have succeeded in duping scores into buying these cameras.
Bargain price
The vendors, who claim they are from Maharashtra, start off by quoting Rs. 2,000 or Rs. 1,500 per camera but after bargaining, they are ready to offer them at Rs. 750 or Rs. 1,000 a piece.
Popular brands
The cameras bear brand names such as Yashica and Olympia (similar to the popular brand name Olympus) and say they are made in Japan or China.
A buyer in Anna Nagar said he had bought two cameras, one manual and another automatic, for Rs. 1,000.
However, he later found that one of them did not work. The vendors seldom make a second visit to the same spot. The women move from place to place looking for customers in crowded residential areas such as Triplicane.
