CHENNAI: Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) has been designated as a collaborating partner of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to undertake advanced research in diabetes, specifically in the area of genomics of the disorder and its complications. The classification as MDRF-ICMR Advanced Centre for Genomics of Type 2 Diabetes is expected to channel in more grants and scale up infrastructure for cutting edge research projects, create a national-level training facility and evolve an international centre of excellence. The ICMR Director General, N. K. Ganguly, is scheduled to formally open the advanced research centre on July 30. "The first phase of ICMR-funded research will focus on early onset of diabetes in the Indian population, interplay of genetic factors and complications and the relatively higher insulin resistance in the ethnic group," V. Mohan, chief diabetologist, MDRF, told a press conference on Friday. The objectives of the centre include serving as nodal centre for genomic research and its complications, training scientific personnel leading to capacity building, improving the quality of diabetes research by providing shared access to specialised technical resources and expertise in relation to genomics of diabetes.
