Number of rat fever cases goes up

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Leptospirosis (rat fever) has claimed 11 lives this year. As many as 124 cases of the diseases have been reported so far this year. The number of cases went up since June, with the onset of the monsoon. Among other communicable diseases, malaria has claimed three lives. As many as 95 cases of the diseases have been reported so far this year. Twenty-five cases of dengue fever have been reported, and no one died of the disease this year. Health authorities have been finding it difficult to control leptospirosis, since proper waste disposal is crucial in controlling the menace of rodents, which spreads the bacteria to people.

The authorities have asked people working in plantations, especially of pineapple, to wear boots and gloves and take protective medicines. Immediate treatment should be taken in case of fever, District Medical Officer K.T. Remani said.
