Handicrafts on show

KOCHI: Kochiites can pick and choose handicrafts from Orissa and Andhra Pradesh at two exhibitions that are going on in the city.

While the Pruthibi Handicrafts Cooperative Society from Bhubaneshwar, supported by the Government of Orissa, has set up its glitter at the Women's Association Hall on Diwan's Road, the Lepakshi handicrafts from Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited have displayed the work of their artisans at Gangothri Hall.

There will be a special rebate of 20 per cent on handloom and 10 per cent on handicrafts at the Pruthibi Society's display. There are handloom fabrics from Sambalpur, Sonepur, Barapali, Manianband, Nuapatna, Berhampur and other areas which provide a rich blend of colours and patterns.

Ikat silk and cotton fabrics, patta saris, patta paintings (traditional famous painting on canvas stiffed with tamarind seeds and chalk powder), tasar paintings, which also have paatachitra and palm leaf engravings with Radha-krishna themes and scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

There are appliqués of Orissa and other handicrafts from key chains to garden umbrellas. The famous silver filigree has also the Konark wheels, chariots and temples besides jewellery on display.

Display at Lepakshi is more elaborate.

There are cotton and jute carpets in kalamkari designs from Warangal and there are the Pochampalli saris and other handlooms from various places in the State.

Dress materials, skirts, tops, lehnga choli for small girls, and kurta-pyjamas are some of the items on display.

Handicrafts ranged from beautiful pottery items, wooden toys, Hyderabad pearls, other gem-studded jewellery, bangles, lamps with painted lampshades and crafted wooden artwork and many metalwares items. There are also some Andhra Pradesh special pickles on sale.

Both the exhibitions are open till July 30 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
