VIJAYAWADA: City-based members of the All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA), the All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) and the Bank Employees' Federation of India (BEFI) staged a dharna in front of Andhra Bank zonal office in One Town on Tuesday in the run-up to the all-India bank strike on Friday. The call for strike has been given in support of the demand for withdrawal of the RBI circular on outsourcing of banking services; withdrawal of RBI's decision to outsource clearing operations; withdrawal of amendment to section 12 (2) of Banking Regulations Act on removal of ceiling on voting rights in banks; filling up of nearly one lakh vacancies in banks through recruitments; and expeditious extension of one more option for pension. Addressing the dharna, CPI state council member and `Visalandhra' editor Edupuganti Nageswara Rao criticised the UPA Government at the Centre for continuing with the same set of policies in the banking sector that the earlier NDA Government had followed, which had "disastrous consequences" for the nation's economic security. The Government, instead of making an attempt to recover the Rs. 1 crore non-performing assets, was rolling out the red carpet to foreign financial institutions to pick up a stake up to 74 per cent in banks. This would not augur well for the priority sector lending, Mr. Rao apprehended. GUNTUR: Employees of various banks will participate in the nationwiide strike. AIBEA Guntur unit president K.V.B.Murali Krishna called upon all bank employees to participate in the protest.
