Commodity prices

The following were the rates (Rupees per kg) of essential commodities in local wholesale market on Tuesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Groundnut oil - 55.50, Palmolein oil - 45, Sunflower oil - 51, Tamarind (flower variety) 30 to 39, Chillies - 35 to 45, Rice (2716) - 14, Rice (superfine) - 15, Rice (sona masoori) - 18 to 19, Rice (samba masoori) - 16, Black gram - 41 to 65, Red gram - 23.50 to 28.

Training camp

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation conducted a training camp on `clean surroundings' to teachers of municipal schools in the city. The camp is aimed at providing proper techniques to teachers to educate their students on `cleanliness and environment protection'. VMC chief medical officer G. Venkata Rao, health officer K. Karuna Murthy and others conducted the camp.

Mutton destroyed

VMC officials confiscated and destroyed 15 kg mutton after an inspection of two shops at Chuttugunta and Sitaramapuram areas in the 28th sanitary division of the city. About Rs. 500 fine was imposed on the respective shop owners. Action was taken as the shop owners were selling mutton without the seal of the VMC.

PCB warning

Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (PCB) will initiate stern action against healthcare establishments that do not comply with the Bio Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998.

Its Regional environmental engineer I. Anjaneya Prasad, in a statement here on Tuesday, said that the High Court, in its interim order, directed the board to take action against establishments that failed to follow the rules within four weeks.
