`Church not for confrontation'

A Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY: Catholicos Baselios Mar Thomas Didymus I, head of the Malankara Orthodox Church, on Tuesday dispelled suggestions of a possible second Liberation Struggle, while stating that the Church was not for a confrontation with the State on the issue of self-financing colleges.

Talking to reporters at Thrikkunnath Seminary, Aluva, he said the Orthodox Church's stand on the issue would be made public after a thorough study of the subject. According to him, the situation did not warrant a second liberation struggle. However, he said that the Church would not surrender the rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

The Catholicos urged the State Government to take the self-financing college managements into confidence to arrive at a consensus, while offering the assistance of the Orthodox Church to reach an amicable settlement.

Earlier, the Catholicos was accorded a rousing reception at the Cochin International Airport when he arrived here after a one-month U.S. tour visiting the churches there. Metropolitans Mathews Mar Eppiphanios, Philipose Mar Eusabios, Thomas Mar Athnasius, Poulose Mar Milithios and Yuhanon Mar Crisostamos, and a host of church officer-bearers, priests and nuns were present at the airport.
