Leopard dies at zoo

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A four-and-a-half-year-old female leopard died at the city zoo this afternoon due to acute pneumonia.

According to Zoo Superintendent Abu the leopard looked very drowsy and salivated a lot on Saturday afternoon. Immediately it was transferred to the zoo hospital and administered medicines. The animal's condition worsened over the past two days and it died this afternoon. The post mortem revealed a lot of stones in the kidney and also indicated that the animal's kidneys had failed. However, the immediate cause of death was pneumonia.

In keeping with the directives of the Central Zoo Authority regarding the disposal of the carcasses of big cats, the leopard carcass was burnt on the zoo premises. This leopard was among the three that were brought over from the forest division at Hassan, Karnataka, in December 2005.
