Auto, taxi drivers to be `cultural ambassadors'

Karnataka Tourism Forum, India Tourism, Transport Department to organise training


  • Over 200 drivers are expected to participate in the programme
  • It is aimed at creating awareness among them about "athithi devo bhava" concept and safety aspects
  • They will be groomed to meet the expectations of customers in the tourism sector

    BANGALORE: Karnataka Tourism Forum in coordination with India Tourism and the State Transport Department will organise a training programme for autorickshaw and taxi drivers at the Yeshwanthpur Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Wednesday.

    The programme called "capacity building for service providers" is aimed at making the autorickshaw drivers understand their role. It is also to inculcate a feeling of being "cultural ambassadors" of the country among the autorickshaw and taxi drivers.

    According to a press release, over 200 drivers are expected to participate in the programme, which will be inaugurated by Transport Commissioner Narayana Gowda.

    The programme has been structured around three important areas.

    It will inculcate a sense of pride among drivers by making them understand their role, create awareness among them about "athithi devo bhava" concept and the aspects of safety. They will be groomed to meet the expectations of customers in the tourism sector, the release has said. Exclusive slides, videos and plays have been designed to make the programme highly interactive and effective.

    The programme is based on guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism and every trained autorickshaw driver will be given a certificate and stipend of Rs 100, the release said.

    Karnataka Tourism Forum and India Tourism have decided to train over 10,000 service providers in the State this year.

    They have planned to cover hotel staff, drivers, travel consultants and dhaba staff in Hassan, Mysore, Hospet, Mangalore, Badami, Belur and Kodagu, the release has said.
