IT staff not to act on returns collected at post offices

Staff Reporter

Employees association opposes outsourcing of work

BANGALORE: Even as the Income Tax Department has made arrangements for collection of IT returns at post offices all over the country, the Joint Council of Action of IT Department Employees has threatened not to act upon returns collected at post offices.

A release from the Income Tax Employees' Federation and Income Tax Gazetted Officers' Association said the Joint Council was opposed to outsourcing of work by the department.

The outsourcing, it said, increased confusion and resulted in chaos with regard to the work, both statutory and otherwise.

The council said despite these hardships, the department was going ahead with outsourcing. As such, promotee officers and staff members would not take any action under the Income Tax Act on those returns such as sorting and classifying such returns on the basis of existing jurisdiction; processing and scrutinising of returns of income under Section 143 of the Act; issue of demand notice and refund communiqué and collection of tax in respect of such returns and entering them in the registers maintained by the department.

It said the service associations of the postal department have said that they would not entertain the work of accepting income tax returns until a settlement was reached between the administration and the employees of the Income Tax Department.
