dated July 27, 1956: Attlee's request to Govt.

Lord Attlee, the former Labour Prime Minister, urged the British Government to end the exile of Archbishop Makarios, leader of the Union with Greece Movement in the colony of Cyprus. Initiating a House of Lords debate on Cyprus, he said: "I ask the Government to make a new approach either through the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or by direct talks. The deportation of Archbishop Makarios was, to put it mildly, an error of judgment. It has accomplished nothing whatever. The Government's hope that sober elements would come forward in Cyprus to co-operate after the removal of Archbishop Makarios had not proved correct. Deplorable outrages continue.''
