Government files writ plea

Kochi: The State Government on Wednesday filed a writ appeal against the clarification of the single judge on an earlier interim order of the Kerala High Court, permitting self-financing medical and dental college managements to conduct admissions as per the existing procedure. According to the Government, the directive of the single judge is against the Supreme Court judgement fixing July 25, 2006 as the deadline for medical and dental admissions. - PTI

Admission procedures suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All admission procedures relating to MBBS and BDS courses - that were scheduled on July 27 and 28 - have been suspended. A press note issued by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations here on Wednesday said students need not report for admission at the respective colleges on those days.

Rs.30.6 crores for

NH maintenance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Shipping and Road Transport Ministry has sanctioned Rs.30.6 crores for maintenance of National Highways in the State. More funds will be allotted after analysing the damage caused by floods, according to K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of Sate for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Development. He was responding to a query by N.N. Krishnadas, MP, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

KSEB to repay bond

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will repay Rs.73.865 crores on July 31 to the holders of its Non-SLR Series VII Bonds issued during 1999-2000. This is the third repayment instalment, the KSEB said in a press release on Wednesday. Cheques `at par' for redeeming these bonds along with interest have already been sent to the bondholders who had surrendered the bond certificates with them. The KSEB's Financial Adviser wants the others to surrender their certificates at an early date and collect their cheques from his office at the Vydyuthi Bhavan (head office of the KSEB) here.

Passenger detained

NEDUMBASSERY: Emigration officials at the Cochin International Airport on Wednesday detained a passenger on charge of possessing a forged passport. Abdul Gafoor (29), hailing from Perinthalmanna, was detained when he came to board the Mahan Air flight bound for Dubai. .

ACV cameraman `assaulted'

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Asianet Cable Vision (ACV) cameraman Biju Prayar was allegedly assaulted by a group of people while taking the video footage of a dharna staged by Students Federation of India activists in front of the Pushpagiri Medical College in Thiruvalla on Wednesday afternoon. In a statement before the Thiruvalla police, the cameraman alleged that he was slapped by the college Principal before being assaulted by a group of people owing allegiance to the college management. He has been admitted to the government hospital in Thiruvalla later.

Open forum for cooking gas consumers

KOLLAM: A district-level open forum on solving the problems faced by cooking gas consumers will be held at the Asramam Government Guest House at 4 p.m. on July 28. District Collector B. Khamarunnisa Anwar resigns

KOZHIKODE: Khamarunnisa Anwar, chairperson of the Kerala State Women's Development Corporation, has resigned. Ms. Anwar told reporters here on Tuesday that she had already sent the resignation letter to the Social Welfare Department secretary. `Fight hepatitis B'

Thrissur: India should launch a vaccination drive against hepatitis B modelled on the one carried out in China recently, Paul J. Thuluvath, director of the Department of Gastro-Surgery of the Johns Hopkins Institute at Baltimore in the U.S., has said. Delivering a lecture on `Hepatitis B and liver diseases' at Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute here on Tuesday, Dr. Thuluvath said 12.5 lakh people die of hepatitis every year all over the world.

Addressing the gathering, District Collector M. Beena expressed concern over the commercialisation of the health sector. V.K. Ramankutty, Principal of Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, presided. Fr. Francis Alapatt, director, T.K. Joseph and V. T. Sandeep, physicians, also spoke.
