Ministers to announce KSDP revival project today

Part of LDF promise to revive public sector units


  • Finance Minister has earmarked Rs.3 crores in the revised budget for the company
  • The initiative has support of all the trade unions in the company

    ALAPPUZHA: A team of four Ministers would announce a project for reviving Kerala State Drugs and Pharmaceuticals (KSDP) Ltd. at Kalavoor in the district at a function at the company on Thursday, its managing director, R. Rajagopal, said here on Wednesday.

    Minister for Finance T.M. Thomas Isaac, in whose Mararikulam constituency is Kalavoor situated; Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran; Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim; and Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy make up the team.

    The revival project is the first such being undertaken by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government as part of its promise to revive ailing public sector units. The initiative has the support of all the trade unions in the company, which include the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, the All-India Trade Union Congress and the Indian National Trade Union Congress, said Mr. Rajagopal and the union leaders at a press conference here.

    Mr. Rajagopal said Mr. Isaac would inaugurate the function. Mr. Karim would preside over it. Mr. Sudhakaran would inaugurate the modernised injection medicine unit of the factory. Mr. Karim would hand over a consignment of medicines produced by the company for the Health Department to Ms. Sreemathy. Alappuzha MP K.S. Manoj would offer felicitations.

    Mr. Rajagopal said the Finance Minister had earmarked Rs. 3 crores in the revised State Budget for the company. The Health Minister had promised priority to the company while buying medicines for the department.

    He said the assurance of the workers and the management of the company to the Government was that it would be made profitable in a year.

    The trade unions had assured the management that they would not be part of any move that would hamper the interests of the factory, Mr. Rajagopal said.

    He said the company had been making profits in the beginning and had always been acclaimed by buyers for the high quality of its medicines. He said the same quality would be ensured when it started functioning now.

    Mr. Rajagopal said the company was preparing a five-year plan for increasing its productivity and diversifying production. The company had got orders from the Health Department and the Andhra Pradesh Government.

    He said the management had requested the Health Department to reserve 30 categories of medicines for the company while making purchases.

    Mr. Rajagopal said the current chance was a golden opportunity for the company to return to its heydays, and the workers and management were eager to utilize it.
