Jawahar Knowledge Centre inaugurated in SVUCE

Centre to train 200 engineering students

TIRUPATI : A Jawahar Knowledge Centre was formally opened at Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) here on Wednesday.

The centre was inaugurated by D. Raj Reddy, professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, whose brainchild is the JKC concept. Interestingly, the initiative came not from the varsity, but from an alumnus, Prof. Reddy himself. The facility adorns SVUCE with the privilege of being the first varsity college to have a JKC.

The centre with 100 workstations will be used to train 200 engineering students. Fifty students selected under `earn while you learn' will also use the facility, while plans are afoot to throw open the systems for industrial interns, thus making optimal utilisation of the facility.

Prof. Reddy appealed to universities not to shy away from applying for a JKC as it would make the students job-worthy by honing their soft skills. With a dropout rate of 61 per cent, the State was far behind the other southern States, he said and wanted the Government to act in time.

APSCHE chairman K.C. Reddy said that education was not an end, but a means for better employability and hence, JKC. He promised to offer a scheme for arts and science students soon. G. Subba Rao, head of the Institute of Electronic Governance, explained that 2,800 JKC-trained students had been recruited by top IT companies in six months.

SVU Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy handed over an offer letter to Prof. Raj Reddy, declaring him as a visiting professor. SVUCE principal N.C. Eswar Reddy welcomed the guests.
