Staff Reporter GUNTUR: Guntur turned into a virtual fortress on Wednesday with hundreds of policemen guarding Government General Hospital mortuary since early morning for the post-mortem of eight slain Maoists. There was curfew-like situation with the police diverting the traffic from 500 metres of the mortuary before the bodies arrived at 8.15 a.m. in a lorry from Yerragondapalem in Prakasam district. As per the High Court directive, a three-man committee of doctors from Forensic Science Department began the work at 11 a.m.
Gadar's presence
Tension prevailed with rumours that balladeer Gadar would perform at Naaz Centre and accompany the bodies to Hyderabad. Relatives of the slain naxalites arrived from Ongole in jeeps and went to the Bar Association premises on the District Court complex. Relatives of only seven of the eight naxalites - three men and five women - arrived but they could identify only six bodies. The bodies were highly decomposed. Other than Madhav the others slain naxals were identified as Uday alias Ramana, Ramesh alias Muthyalu, Shyamala alias Vijayalakshmi, Rajitha alias Susheela, Nagamani alias Swarna and Sangeetha. A team of doctors consisting of Professor of Forensic Science G.B. Rajkumar, Assistant professor Mandava Srinivasa Rao and GGH in-charge Superintendent Phanibhushan conducted the post mortem. Borra Kanakaiah, brother of Madhav, and Komaraiah claimed his body and shifted it to their village.
No claimants
Post mortem on bodies of two slain woman naxalites has been withheld as none of their relatives came to claim them. While one of them was identified as Sangeetha, the other could not be identified. The relatives of three slain naxals -- Shyamala, Uday and Rajitha -- pleaded with officials to allow them to take the bodies to Hyderabad. The police escorted the vans till they went out of the city and ensured that no untoward incident occurred.
