Tea vendor held; explosives seized

VIJAYAWADA: The One Town police on Wednesday arrested a tea vendor, Allumilli Narayana, on the charge of possessing explosives. They seized 15 power-gel sticks, 30 detonators, two kg of ammonium nitrate and two bundles of fuse wire. The police suspect Narayana was a courier for quarry owners of Ibrahimpatnam and their counterparts in Guntur, who were exchanging explosives used for blasting.

HYDERABAD: Former Minister Bashiruddin Babukhan has collected statistics on the number of Muslim students and employees in three universities in the State, in response to information sought by the Prime Minister's High-level Committee on Muslim Welfare in higher education institutions. He said on Wednesday the statistics had been passed on to Justice Subramanyam, Chairman, BC Commission. - Special Correspondent

Sarpanch candidate missing

Sangareddy: Erukala Sayilu a TDP supported candidate for the sarpanch post of Kadalur village in Tekmal mandal has allegedly been kidnapped by a rival group belonging to the Congress three days ago. Scholarships for students

HYDERABAD: Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta, which is celebrating its silver jubilee this year, will present scholarships worth Rs. 15 lakhs to 115 SSC and Intermediate students from all districts of the State here on July 29. 12-day Vasavi

festival planned

Kakinada : A 12-day festival has been planned from August 13 to mark the coronation of the Goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Paramesweri, stated to be the first of its kind, after 4,465 years in the history of Arya Vysya community, according to Polisetti Vasu Babu, Chairman of the Kanyaka Paramesweri Charitable trust. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday along with Arya Vysya community leaders, he said over three lakh people from the State besides Karnataka, TN, Maharashtra and UP were expected to attend the festival. — Correspondent

Bank staff plan strike

Kakinada : The employees of all banks except the SBI in East Godavari will participate in the All India strike on July 28, according to K. Adinarayana Murthy, Joint secretary of the District Bank employees coordination committee. Three national organisations-All India Bank (AIB) employees Association, AIB Officers Association and Bank employees Federation of India called the strike. Mr. Murthy said the strike was to protest the Government's attempts of outsourcing bank work to private agencies and contractors. He said all cash transactions would be totally stopped. — Correspondent

Revenue official convicted

HYDERABAD: A local court here had convicted a Junior Assistant working in the Nyalkal Mandal Revenue Office in Medak district, G. Ramulu, to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment following his conviction in a corruption case. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested him seven years ago on charge of accepting Rs. 400 bribe from a complainant, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

7 held on theft charges

NIZAMABAD: The Nizamabad town circle police arrested seven persons allegedly involved in different theft cases over a period of time in the town and recovered five two-wheelers, 10 tolas of gold, as many tolas of silver ornaments and two mobile phones, all worth Rs.2.25 lakhs from their possession. The accused -- Paramatla Yellappa, Salla Raju, Shaik Mosin, Palanati Tirupati, Yakub Khan, Devakanta Sandeep and Mutharasi Naveen -- were remanded to judicial custody, according to Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha. - Staff Reporter

Holiday declared on polling days

KARIMNAGAR: The district administration has declared local holiday on the polling dates in the respective revenue divisions that would go for polling in three phases in the district for the election of sarpanches and ward members.
