BANGALORE: The State Government has prepared a Rs. 6,903.8- crore package to tackle the problem of distress among farmers will be implemented in the districts of Belgaum, Hassan, Chikmgalur, Kodagu, Shimoga and Chitradurga. The Centre has identified 31 districts in four States Andhra Pradesh (16), Maharashtra (6), Karnataka (6) and Kerala (3) for a special rehabilitation package to mitigate distress among farmers over a three-year period. The package includes debt relief to farmers through waiver of entire arrears of interest and rescheduling of overdue loans, as on June 30, 2006; additional credit flow for providing complete credit cover in the six districts; completion of major, medium and minor irrigation projects; watershed management including check dam and rain water harvesting and installation of drip and sprinkler irrigation. According to the Secretariat, Rs. 497 crore has been earmarked for the development of horticulture under the package. A sum of Rs. 400 crore has been earmarked for watershed development; Rs. 218.81 crore for animal husbandry, livestock and fisheries development; Rs. 2,868.85 crore for assured irrigation facilities; Rs. 1,058.50 crore for development programmes for farm sector, and Rs. 1.41 crore for waiver of loans and interest due from farmers who have committed suicide.
