Students vow to combat terrorism

Correspondent

MUMBAI: Hundreds of students around the city wore white and recited a pledge on Wednesday to promote peace and combat terrorism on the anniversary of last year's deadly floods.

Under the banner "Mumbai In White," leaders of the movement said that they hoped to instil values of peace and communal harmony among the city's youth.

"Students from over 30 colleges have taken a united stand, a stand against terrorism," Prof. Y.M. Choonawala told students at the Burhani College of Commerce and Arts. Students saw images of the July 11 train blasts and listened to songs by John Lennon and Bob Dylan.

"We, the youth of today, love humanity, and the need was felt to come together and bond together," said Faraz Ansari, a student at the college. "We oppose communal violence, terror and wars."

"Wherever you find that a certain community is being labelled, it is our right to stand up and say that is unacceptable," said Deveika Bhojwani of Citizens for Peace, a group formed after the 1992-93 riots in the city.
