BANGALORE: Very few people acknowledge the reasons for their success in life, including the selfless efforts and contributions of their teachers.

However, here is a student who has made a name in the filed of literature and music with his innovative approach and is eager to felicitate his guru. Known as `Pustakada Mane' Nagaraja Rao in literary circles of Chikmagalur, Kalkatte H.M. Nagaraja Rao, a lecturer at a pre-university College in Chowlahiriyur in Chikmagalur district, will honour his teacher, Sampagodu Suryanarayana Bhat, in Bangalore on Thursday. The "Guruvandana" will be done at the house of Mr. Bhat at Thyagarajanagar.

Mr. Rao, hailing from Kalkatte village in Sringeri taluk, has been active in literary circles as a writer, singer and music director. He has spread the habit of reading in a small village like Chowlahiriyur, away from his hometown, by establishing a large library at his house with the help of his wife, Rekha. Mr. Bhat, born in 1942 in an agricultural family of Kikre village in Sringeri taluk, was enthused by classical music and learnt the basics from Shankaranarayana Bhat, headmaster of the Girls' Higher Primary School, Sringeri. Later, he learned classical music from K. Venkatasubramanya Iyer at Kanchanashree Lakshminarayana Music School in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada district. He was a disciple of Ramakrishna Bhagavatar in Bangalore.

Known for hundreds of Kannada and Sanskrit compositions, under the name "Hariharagurudasa," Mr. Bhat is a prominent figure in Carnatic music in the State.
