CHENNAI:
Autorickshaw fares in Chennai will be revised soon, according to Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Letika Saran.
It will be the first revision in fare since 1996 and could meet the long-pending demand of autorickshaw unions.
"We are getting many complaints from people against autorickshaw operators.
"The issue has been studied and shortly, autorickshaws will have revised fares... ," the Commissioner said on Wednesday.
Talking to The Hindu, Ms. Saran said: "We find there is a slight fall in the crime rate compared with the previous year. Until June, we recorded 1,545 cases including property offences among others. Things are under control."
Crime prevention
On steps to prevent crime, she said 600 night patrol parties had been deployed in the city. Officers in the ranks of Inspectors to Deputy Commissioners supervised them. Welcoming the enthusiasm shown by members of the public who had joined hands with the police in community police work, the Police Commissioner said members of the Friends of Police accompanied the night patrol parties in select areas.
Explaining the steps taken towards community policing, the Commissioner said Inspectors were trying to meet with residents/traders under their jurisdiction to find ways to reduce incidence of crime.
