Rain likely today

The city on Wednesday received light rainfall. According to the Meteorological Department, the city recorded 6.4 mm rainfall from 8.30 a.m. to around 8.30 p.m. The department said the city may experience more showers on Thursday.

Power shutdown

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company said there will be no power supply between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the following areas: Air Force Station, Border Security Force, Venkatala limits, Yelahanka Old Town, Maruthi Nagar, Kogilu and surrounding areas.

Free eye camp

Shraddha Eye Care Trust and Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital is conducting free eye screening and surgical camp in association with the Lions Club of Greater Jnana Bharathi and Sri Sai Mandiram Trust on Saturday at Sri Sai Dispensary, Girinagar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Patients fit for cataract surgery will be operated at the base hospital free of cost. Kannada classes

Vivek Foundation is conducting basic Kannada classes for a month from Sunday between 10 a.m. and noon every Sunday at Corporation Girls High School in Gandhinagar. For details, call 9845023851.

Students' conference

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Bangalore Chapter, is organising an All India Students Conference on July Saturday and Sunday at the Institute of Agricultural Technologists on Queen's Road. The conference will include mock annual general meeting, mock stock exchange and business quizzes.

Recovered

The Yeshwanthapur police have arrested three persons on charge of robbery and recovered from them gold ornaments estimated at Rs. 1.50 lakh. The arrested were involved in nine robberies reported from Yeshwanthpur, Sooladevanahalli, Nelamangala, Hebbugodi and Doddabelavengala police station limits, the police said. Their names were given as Jagadish (28), Prakash (26) and Nagesh (28).

Applications invited

The 515 Army Base Workshop here has invited applications from ITI certificate holders (NCVT pattern) for 37 posts of apprentices in the trades of machinist, welder, electrician, tool-maker (press tools, jigs and fixtures), sheet metal and worker maintenance. Interested candidates can apply with biodata to the commandant and managing director, 515 Army Base Workshop, Ulsoor, Bangalore-560008 by August 10. The duration of training for all trades, except sheet metal worker, is one year. For sheet metal worker it is two years. Selected candidates will be paid stipend as per rules, according to a press release.

Property tax reduced

The Byatrayanapura City Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to reduce property tax rate levied from 0.6 per cent to 0.4 per cent. Residents of the CMC had protested against the increase in property tax rate on July 21 in front of the Commissioner's office. "We decided to reduce the tax in our council meeting on July 17, " S.Raja, standing committee chairman said.
