St. Joseph's College offers certificate courses

ON THE lines of its annual honours programmes, the city-based autonomous St. Joseph's College has announced 23 certificate courses for this year, open for students of the college and for others. Each course will be of 120-hour duration, to be conducted on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Here is the complete list of courses on offer: Peace Studies, Legal Literacy, Journalism and Media Studies, Econometrics and Research Methodology, Fundamentals of Bioinformatics (UGC sponsored), Quantitative Skills for Competitive Examinations, Building Construction Management, Building Maintenance Management, Life Insurance, Advertising, Architecture Design, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Personal Excellence, Film Production Course, Basics of Medical Transcription (industry sponsored), Principles of Genetic Engineering, Gene Cloning (UGC sponsored), Analytical Methods in Chemistry (UGC sponsored), Advance Diploma Bio-Informatics, Dance Styles, CEPHAS Musical Talent, Modern Theatre in English, and Course in Essential Life Skills.

The course on Legal Literacy is in collaboration with the National Law School of India University. The programme on Leadership and Personal Excellence is conceived around Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques and tools to provide students with skills to realise their hidden potential, enhance their self-image, boost their performance and to acquire personal mastery and well being.

Under the Film Production Course, each student would have to conceptualise and complete a short film of eight to 12 minutes. The production process will be guided to develop student creativity and film research skills in a structured manner.

The programme in Dance Styles will feature basic training in various dance styles including Western Freestyles, Indian Contemporary Dance, Modern Brake, Hip Hop, Jazz, Aerobics, Acrobatics, Jive and Salsa. The course on CEPHAS Musical Talent will be about Accapella, Guitar Classes, Keyboard Classes, Drums and Percussions.

College principal Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto S.J. says that several of the programmes are geared towards skills.

"There are a number of students who desire to make careers out of the skills. Some of the courses may help them. There are others who desire to go beyond what is taught in the classrooms. Some of the courses are for that purpose."

Investiture ceremony

The Carmel Pre-University College in Basaveshwaranagar here recently organised the investiture ceremony of the college's students' council for 2006-07 and released the college magazine.

The chief guest for the investiture ceremony, Bharath Chandra, Chairman, Winners Institute, handed over the badges of honour and the ceremonial gown to the student president. The vice-president of Carmel Education Society, Rev. Fr. Eric Rodrigues released the college magazine.
