AIDS: Policemen told to take preventive steps
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao urged the police force to be more responsive to the challenge of HIV/AIDS.
At the valedictory of a three-day workshop for police personnel on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, he said: "We have to look into our own organisation and see what we need to do to protect ourselves and the general community." The police force in the State comprises 74,000 personnel. Mr. Rao said the police needed to take a more sensitive approach in dealing with persons living with HIV/AIDS and sex workers. "We have to re-examine how we respond to their concerns," he said.
The workshop, which brought together senior police officials from Bangalore and Deputy Superintendents of Police and Inspector-General of Police, was organised by the Karnataka State Aids Prevention Society and the Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT).
