NEW DELHI: The Centre has modified the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme to provide funds for construction of anganwadi centres in the north-eastern States on a regular basis in view of their special needs and status. In general, the scheme does not provide for the construction of anganwadi buildings but for other inputs including supplementary nutrition.
Residual funds
The allocation for the construction of the anganwadi centres in the north-east will be to the extent of utilisation of residual funds out of 10 per cent of mandatory allocation for the States. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has already approved the construction of about 20,000 anganwadi centres sanctioned till 2005.
Rs.144 crore provided
During 2006-07, more than Rs. 144 crore has been provided to the north-eastern States and Sikkim. The State-wise break up is: Arunachal Pradesh (Rs. 886.75 lakh), Assam (Rs. 7,931.1 lakh), Manipur (Rs. 1,435.36 lakh), Meghalaya (Rs. 870.16 lakh), Mizoram (Rs. 556.96 lakh), Nagaland (Rs. 1,241.90 lakh), Tripura (Rs. 1,274.63 lakh) and Sikkim (Rs. 217. 47 lakh).
