Security situation grim, says National Conference

SRINAGAR: Terming the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir as "extremely critical," the Opposition National Conference has accused the Congress-led coalition government of failing on all fronts.

It also said the six-day Assembly session beginning on Friday was a crude joke on democracy.

Going `out of hand'

A day before President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is to address the joint legislature, the NC leader in the Assembly Abdur Raheem Rather told reporters that the security situation in the State was going "out of hand." He said the violation of human rights was also on the increase.

The NC leader alleged that the Assembly session had been shortened to avoid discussion on important issues. "We were told the session would be month-long. They are scared of facing people's representatives."

Allegation refuted

Refuting the allegation, president of the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee and Minister for Haj, Auqaf and Sports, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, said the situation was under control.

Mr. Sayeed said the situation was `near-normal' but regretted that the "enemies of peace across the border don't want peace to return to Kashmir."

Members concerned

Quite in contrast to Mr. Sayeed's views, the JKPCC's political resolution, passed unanimously on Thursday by some 62 executive members, voiced concern over the law and order problem in the State.

"We are concerned about the law and order problem in the State due to the recent violent incidents and about the safety of the people and party workers," the resolution said.
