Demand for including Hubli and Dharwad in urban project

300 people were arrested when they staged a `rasta roko'

  • Members of several organisations took part in the rasta roko

    Hubli: Over 300 people belonging to various organisations were arrested when they tried to stage a `rasta roko' on various roads in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad and surrounding villages on Thursday.

    They were demanding the inclusion of the cities Hubli and Dhaward in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the early implementation of the Kalsa-Banduri Nala Project. The JNNURM and Kalasa-Banduri Horata Samiti had called for the rasta roko, to which several organisations had expressed support.Former Hubli-Dharwad Mayor Anil Kumar Patil and president of the samiti had said that the samiti would stage several rasta rokos on 60 roads in the twin cities and surrounding villages for 90 minutes on Thursday.

    However, the police did not allow protestors to continue their protest for more than 15 minutes. Members of various organisations including Mr. Patil were arrested when they tried to prolong the agitation. They were later released.
