IT stir plan called off
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Income-tax assessees who are yet to file their returns can heave a sigh of relief. For, barring the last-minute rush, the taxpayers are unlikely to be inconvenienced as the non-IRS (Indian Revenue Service) employees of the I-T Department on Thursday decided to call off their proposed agitation.
The plan of agitation was to "walk out" from offices on July 31 -- the last date of filing of returns for the salaried class -- and not report for duty at the special counters on Saturday and Sunday.
Government nod
The decision to call of the stir was taken after the Government agreed to fill up the vacancies, which was one of the major demands of the employees' unions.
As per the settlement proposal, about 3,300 vacancies are to be filled up in six to 12 months. Of these, more than 2,900 are `Group C' posts.
The Government has also agreed not to outsource core I-T functions.
"We are calling off our agitation as the Government has also agreed positively to consider our demand of filling up 10,000 additional vacancies," the President of the Income-Tax Gazetted Officers Association, B. Shanthi Kumar, said.
