NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat on Thursday condemned the Israeli war against the Lebanese people and demanded that the Centre sever all military ties with Israel.

Addressing protesters who had gathered under the banner of the Committee Against Israeli Aggression here, Mr. Karat said that it was the duty of the Government to stop buying Israeli arms. [India is its largest buyer]. Lauding the brave resistance put up by the Lebanese people, Mr. Karat said the Israeli invasion and the resultant death and destruction was a continuation of the Israeli war and genocide against the Palestinian people.

Stating that the attacks had the full backing of the United States, he extended full support to the cause of the Lebanese people and called for an immediate halt to the "barbarities."

"Imperialist aggression"

Communist Party of India secretary D. Raja said the war was an imperialist aggression and cannot be justified under any pretext and demanded that the United Progressive Alliance Government take a forthright stand against Israeli aggression. He also demanded the United Nations intervention to end the conflict.

Earlier, the protesters from various Left parties, including the Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party, gathered on Shahjahan Road to march down to the Israeli Embassy on Aurangzeb Road. However, the police stopped the protesters on Shahjahan Road.

The protesters also burnt the effigies of U.S. President George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert besides carrying placards asking Israel to quit occupied territories. Mr. Phul Singh of the RSP also addressed the rally.
