Dragons have figured prominently in the myths and legends of many cultures. And their stories -- whether good or evil -- have been passed down faithfully from one generation to the next since time immemorial. Now Discovery Channel will air a two-hour special programme on dragons on August 6. Titled "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real", the programme combines legends, scientific facts and theories, cutting-edge special effects and animation. To bring dragons alive on the small screen, computer-generated imagery and graphics have been extensively used. In ancient Western legends, dragons were often depicted as evil and dangerous creatures, while in Asian cultures they have been considered a symbol of luck and power. Dragons can be seen in divergent media like films, music, literature and television. Children look up to them as magical, intelligent and humorous creatures. Moreover, dragons succeed in capturing the imagination of people of all ages. To make the dragons look real, the channel has collaborated with top scientists, artists and animators. Basically the programme depicts how dragons would have evolved into a number of different species through the ages and around the globe. Making an attempt to unravel the science behind the fantasy of dragons, the programme shows how dragons find their mates, how they raise their young ones and protect their territories, just as animals have been doing throughout history. -- Madhur Tankha
