Asha enters quarterfinals

NEW DELHI: Qualifier Asha Nandakumar knocked out the fourth-seeded Czarina-Mae Arevalo of Philippines 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to move into the quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament at Bangkok on Thursday.

Asha had beaten Hee-Sun Lyoo-Suh of Korea 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round. In the qualifying event, Asha beat Michelle Russ of Australia 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-4 and Daowadueng Phonkan of Thailand 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

The Bangalore girl also made the doubles semifinals in partnership with Dilyara Saidkhodjayeva (Uzbekistan). The Indo-Uzbek pair beat the third-seeded Shao-Yuan Kao of Chinese Taipei and Pichittra Thongdach of Thailand 7-6 (10), 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Harsh Mankad's winning streak came to an end as he was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by the eighth-seeded Arvind Parmar of Britain in the pre-quarterfinals of the Nottingham Challenger tournament.

Earlier, Shivang Mishra in partnership with Aidan Fitzgerald of Australia lost 2-6, 5-7 to the top-seeded Joshua Goodall and Ross Hutchins of Britain in the quarterfinals.

Prakash Amritraj went down fighting 6-7 (6), 5-7 to Noam Okun of Israel in the first round of the Granby Challenger.

In the ITF men's Futures tournament at Hunedoara (Romania), Divij Sharan in partnership with Bogdan Leonte of Romania lost 4-6, 3-6 to Alexandru Carpen and Alexandru Cojanu of Romania in the quarterfinals.
