Bhadra channels will be modernised: Eshwarappa

Staff Correspondent

Farmers in Davangere and other areas assured of sufficient water

  • Kolar, Chitradurga, Tumkur districts may become deserts if water is not given
  • Ministers Ravindranath and Shankaramurthy, who had opposed the project, have been convinced

DAVANGERE: K.S. Eshwarappa, Minister for Irrigation, on Thursday said the Government would take up work to modernise the Bhadra channels along with the Upper Bhadra Project.

He said farmers of Davangere and other regions would get sufficient water once the channels were modernised.

    Fears allayed

Talking to presspersons, Mr. Eshwarappa said farmers need not fear that they would be deprived of Bhadra waters after the Upper Bhadra Project was implemented. He said if Kolar, Chitradurga and Tumkur districts were not given water through any project, they would become deserts.

He claimed to have convinced Ministers S.A. Ravindranath and D.H. Shankaramurthy in regard to the Upper Bhadra Project.

Mr. Ravindranath and Mr. Shankaramurthy had opposed the Upper Bhadra Project.

    Excess water

Mr. Eshwarappa said he did not see anything wrong in utilising excess water, which was going to sea, and pointed out that the proposed Upper Bhadra Project would not affect the catchment areas of the Bhadra.

He said a meeting of farmers had been convened on July 31 in Bangalore where a final decision on the implementation of the project would be taken.
