Assembly session from August 17

HYDERABAD: A brief monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly will begin on August 17. This decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday. The Government is planning a session for 11 working days but the Information Minister Mohd Ali Shabbir said later that the Business Advisory Committee of the House would decide on the duration. - Special Correspondent

YSR pays tributes to Brahmananda Reddy

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday paid tributes to the former Chief Minister, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, on his 97th birth anniversary falling on Friday. In a message, Dr. Reddy recalled the invaluable services rendered by the former Chief Minister, who he termed as a veteran freedom fighter and an able parliamentarian. Great persons such as Rajaji and Lal Bahadur Shastry hailed him as the most courageous and shrewd national leader in public life, he said. - Special Correspondent

Banks to accept IT payments

HYDERABAD: Arrangements have been made with all banks to accept cheques and challans towards payment of Income Tax, the RBI has announced. The banks include all branches of State Bank of India and its associates, all public sector banks, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and UTI Bank, N.K. Scooters burnt in showroom fire

KADAPA: Three new scooters and furniture worth Rs. 3.50 lakhs were destroyed a fire in LML company showroom at Almaspet here on Thursday morning. Registration papers of several vehicles were also destroed in the mishap caused by an electrical short circuit, according to police. - Staff Reporter

TAMA scholarships

Hyderabad: Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta (TAMA) will award scholarships worth $33,000 (nearly Rs. 15 lakhs) to 115 meritorious students of government schools across the State on Saturday here. The scholarships are being given as part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations this year.

The celebrations are to be held at Atlanta on September 2 and 3, the association president, Balakrishna Indurti, told reporters on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Guntakal-Tirupati-Guntakal passenger service will not be available on July 29 and 30 (Saturday & Sunday) due to bridge maintenance work taken up between Kamalapuram and Yerragudipadu stations, according to a South Central Railway release. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

KHAMMAM: Two persons were killed in a road accident near Pindiprolu village in Tirumalapalem mandal on Thursday. The accident occurred as an autorickshaw rammed into a stationary lorry. The deceased were identified as D. Rajesh, 19, and Gollapalli Navyajothi, 22, both belonging to Warangal district. The police were investigating. Staff Reporter

Salva Judum acivist

dies of injures

KHAMMAM : A Salva Judum, Sheik Munna, 33, activist who was injured in the attack of Maoists on Erraboru camp on July 17, died on Thursday. He was admitted to the Khammam district headquarters hospital with head injuries. He was shifted to the NIMS as his condition deteriorated subsequently. He succumbed to the injuries. His body was sent to Erraboru in the day.

paramedical courses

KADAPA: Counselling for admission into paramedical courses such as cardiology technician, ECG technician, DMLT and others, will be held in three phases on July 28, August 7 and August 14 respectively. Principal and Chairman of ParaMedical Selection Committee of Kurnool Medical College K.N. Sudha Ramana urged applicants of Kurnool and Tirupati medical colleges as well as Anantapur Government Medical College to attend the counselling session at Kurnool Medical College at 9 a.m. on July 28. -Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: C. Umashankar, professor of Operations Research and Statistical Quality Control (OR and SQC), assumed charge as Special Officer of Post- graduate Centre here on Thursday. Incidentally, Prof. Umashankar was a student of the first batch of the centre. Prof. Shankar said he would strive for getting an autonomous status for the centre. Two persons die

of snakebite

KURNOOL: Two persons died of snakebite at C. Belagal in Kurnool district on Thursday. According to reports the deceased were identified as Veresh, 21 and his sister Veresamma, (19).

In another incident, an unidentified person was run over by the Tungabhadra Express near Tungabhadra bridge. He died on the spot and the body fell into the river. - Staff Reporter
