NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched a signature campaign seeking support from other parties to exert pressure on the Manmohan Singh Government to take a strong stand against Israel in the wake of its continuing attack against Lebanon. The party said it had drafted a memorandum on which over 100 Members of Parliament had already signed and it would be submitted to the Prime Minister on Friday. Stating this, party MP and Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said among the demands were that India move the international community to impose sanctions against Israel and suspend purchase of arms from that country. Mr. Yechury said that after the United States, India was the second largest arms buyer from Israel, which in the present attacks against Lebanon would mean that New Delhi was financing the situation. In addition, Mr. Yechury said the Left parties had communicated to the Government its opposition to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill and the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill. The Left parties wanted the pension funds to be managed by public sector companies and not allow the funds to be placed in the stock market. As for the banking bill, the opposition was to raise voting rights cap from the present 10 per cent. Mr. Yechury said the Left parties want the Government to introduce the Women's Reservation Bill.
