HYDERABAD: A day after the joy that the rain brought to people, the harsh realities of the battered roads in the city welcomed them. The incessant rain on Tuesday and Wednesday left the roads under sheets of water making driving difficult, but the situation worsened on Thursday with vehicle users left to deal with potholes and gravel strewn all over.

It was a bumpy ride for early morning travellers near the Oliphant bridge in Secunderabad. There was little of a road and more of gravel. So was the case on the Bowenpally route. "The road just disappeared," pointed out Praveen Kumar, an employee of a private firm.

Similar was the scene on several routes where the MCH dug up roads for widening. An airline employee Kiran returning to his home in East Marredpally faced a harrowing experience. "There was hardly any road left on the Shenoy Nursing Home route. This is the case after only two days of rain," he said. The introduction of quality checking gadgets and threats of blacklisting contractors for sub-standard work evidently failed to bring about any change. "How can officials ignore such poor quality work. Contractors and officials should be taken to task," fumed Hariprasad of Ashoknagar.
