Robbery in Tirunagar house at knifepoint

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: In a daylight robbery, a three-member gang on Wednesday barged into a house at Tirunagar and at knifepoint forced the occupants to part with valuables, police sources said.

On entering the house of S. Marimuthu (53), Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies, around noon, the intruders pretended to be his friends and made enquiries with his mother S. Krishnammal (65) and a relative, K. Suryakumar (26). Even as they were answering, the suspects brandished weapons and asked him to part with almirah keys. Krishnammal and Suryakumar were tied to chairs and locked in a room.

Even as the gang was searching for valuables, Mr. Marimuthu came home for lunch. They dragged him into another room and threatened to kill him if he raised an alarm. During the one-hour operation, the intruders made several calls using their mobile phones. They took away 29 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 25,000 in cash kept in a safe.

Madurai Superintendent of Police T.S. Anbu, visited the scene. Fingerprint experts were pressed into service. "We are pursuing some clues and special teams have been formed to investigate the case," he said.

Computer-aided portraits of the suspects have been developed.
