NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member and Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat on Thursday demanded that the Government come out with a time frame for increasing the remuneration of anganwadi workers and helpers. Addressing workers and helpers who are on an indefinite relay hunger strike at Jantar Mantar here since Tuesday, Ms. Karat said the government had, in a written reply in Parliament, agreed to increase the remuneration but had not specified when. She also told the workers that she had raised the issue in Parliament and that all political parties supported their demands. Rajya Sabha MP P. Madhu extended his support to the workers and said their historic struggle would not only pressurise the government but also inspire the entire trade union movement in the country. Anganwadi workers and helpers, under the aegis of the All-India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, have been demanding better remuneration and recognition as Group-III (for workers) and Group-IV (for helpers) government employees.
Operations
They are also demanding enhanced dearness allowance as interim relief and that the operations of anganwadi centres should not be handed over to private parties or non-government organisations.
