Panel report on GSLV launch failure within a month: Nair

Staff Reporter

Bangalore : The Failure Analysis Committee (FAC) constituted to look into the failure of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F02 will submit a report in a month's time, said G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He told presspersons that that the committee had made satisfactory progress in the investigation of the GSLV failure. "The preliminary research data is available. The thrust controller of the engine did not function properly, which is why the vehicle veered off its orbit. But why that particular controller malfunctioned has to be identified through experimentation," he said. Mr. Nair said that ISRO was preparing for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle launch that had been scheduled in October. "We have realised the individual stages. It will be integrated later. We are confident of getting the vehicle ready for the launch in October," he said. The next GSLV launch would take place next year, he added. The GSLV-F02, which blasted off with the INSAT-4C satellite from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 10, deviated from its flight path. The mission controllers were forced to destroy the vehicle. ISRO had formed the FAC to investigate the failure of the launch.
