`Encroachments on water bodies will be removed'

Steps will be taken to establish a flower auction centre: Collector

Dharmapuri: Farmers have requested the district administration to remove the encroachments on water bodies at the agricultural grievances day meeting held here on Thursday.

Encroachments on the inlets of the tanks had blocked the flow of rainwater resulting in water going waste, they said. Responding to the grievances of the farmers, the Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, said that steps would be initiated to remove encroachments on tanks and other water bodies in the district. They claimed that the left main canal of the Ichampadi canal was severely damaged in the incessant rains during 2005. Though repeated requests were made to the authorities concerned to undertake repair works on the canal, nothing concrete had emerged till date.

Storage

In addition, repair of sluices and strengthening of supply channels should also be taken up to recharge the storage capacity. To this, the District Revenue Officer, Nagarajan, said that repairs would be taken up after availing funds from the State Government.

Cut flowers

The farmers also requested the district administration to establish a flower auction centre in Dharmapuri district. They claimed that more than 2,000 farmers were engaged in cultivation of cut flowers in the district. Due to lack of a flower auction centre, they were forced to sell their produce to private traders. To avoid this, the Government should establish a flower auction centre for the benefit of farmers in this region.

To this the Collector said that steps would be initiated to establish a flower auction centre in Dharmapuri at the earliest.

Shortage of doctors in primary health centres and electricity connection for pump sets were also discussed in the meeting.

The Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, R. Loganathan, and the Project Officer, DRDA, Idi Mannan, were present.
