Move for outsourcing banking services opposed

Unions urge employees to fight privatisation attempts


  • Members to fight `tooth and nail' against privatisation
  • Leaders demand filling up of one-lakh vacant jobs

    ONGOLE : Bank employees struck work on Friday in response to the call given by the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) to protest against outsourcing of banking services and constitution of national payment corporation.

    They staged dharna near Andhra Bank on the Court Street and later held a meeting at Syndicate bank near the Nellore bus stand.

    Prakasam district bank employees' association secretary P. Narasimham, who presided, asked the members to fight against privatisation attempts in the banking sector and proposals to merge banks.

    He demanded that the RBI withdraw its directive for outsourcing banking services and give up plans to entrust clearing services to the national payment corporation.

    He called upon bank employees prepare for an indefinite strike on these issues.

    Andhra Bank award employees' union leaders, P Anjaneyulu and Udayakumar demanded the Government to fill up one lakh vacant bank jobs.

    Transactions hit

    Eluru staff reporter writes: Transactions in most city banks came to a standstill on Friday in view of the all-India strike by the AIBEA. The response to the strike was complete in all banks, except a section of SBI employees not affiliated to the AIBEU. Later, the striking employees staged a demonstration in front of the Andhra Bank at Ramachandraraopet.

    The union leaders expressed their resentment against the RBI's move of outsourcing and expressed their opposition to the proposal for entrusting of activities relating to clearance house to private agencies. They declared they would fight tooth and nail against any move that aimed at privatising the banking sector.
