THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said the Government will take all necessary steps to protect the interests of the State in the Mullaperiyar issue. In an official press note here on Friday he said it was on February 27 that the Supreme Court ordered the raising of the water level of the dam. It was the petition filed by the State Government to review that order which it dismissed today. It was fully against Kerala's interests. He attributed the original order to the previous Government's failure to present Kerala's case effectively before the court. The dismissal of the review petition was done without even hearing the State's arguments. There was a demand to refer the issue for arbitration during the discussion on the Dam Safety Bill. A solution to the issue could be found only through that. The then Government agreed to do so but it was now clear that it did not do anything for the purpose, the release said. The dam was constructed 110 years ago. It posed a threat to the lives of lakhs of people of the State. Its age, dangerous condition and the State's concern should have been taken into consideration. As the present order was highly detrimental to the State, all attempts would be made to bring about a change.
