Government criticised for custodial deaths

Thiruvananthapuram: UDF convener P.P. Thankachan has criticised the Government for justifying the police action in the numerous custodial deaths instead of taking strong action against erring cops. In a statement here on Friday, he said that even though the Home Minister had been promising strong action, it had become clear that he was unable to control the trend. — Special Correspondent

`Prisoners not

tortured in jails'

THRISSUR: Director General of Police (DGP) (Prisons) M.G.A. Raman has said that the increasing number of prisoners and lack of enough staff are adding to the problems in jails in the State. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the `tree planting festival' at the Viyyur Central Prison here on Friday evening, Mr Raman denied reports that prisoners were tortured in jails in the State. He said steps have been taken to provide good facilities to the inmates of prisons. — Staff Reporter

Rights panel sitting postponed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The camp sitting of the State Human Rights Commission, scheduled to be held in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha on July 29, and the enquiry that the investigation wing of the Commission was scheduled to conduct in Thodupuzha on July 30 have been postponed. Also postponed is the seminar to be organised for the representatives of local bodies at Kollam on August 5. The fresh dates of these programmes will be announced later. — Special Correspondent

Rebate on khadi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Special rebate has been announced on khadi garments from August 1 to September 4. The rebate on cotton, spun, woollen Khadi will be 30 per cent and on silk and polyester Khadi will be 20 per cent. The rebate will be available at all sales centres operating under the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and Kerala Khadi Village Industries Board. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The PSC will conduct the common interview for the posts of Sub Inspector of Police Trainee GEB and DAR, Armed Police SI Trainee and SI Trainee, motor transport unit at its head office here from August 1 to 5. Moot court contest inaugurated

KOTTAYAM: The sixth all-India Human Rights Moot Court competitions, organised by the School of Indian Legal Thought (SILT) under Mahatma Gandhi University, began here on Friday. Inaugurating the three-day competitions, the former Supreme Court judge K.T. Thomas focussed on the increasing incidence of human rights violations in the country. Individual right to good air, to travel, and to work were being increasingly threatened by organised segments, he said. Political organisations and civil society cannot shirk responsibility from the increasing threat to human rights. He also stressed the need for young legal minds to be sensitive to such issues. Vice-Chancellor Jancy James presided. K. Vikraman Nair, director, SILT, welcomed the gathering. The moot court competitions will begin on Saturday. --Staff Reporter

Kanchi seer

to aid CDB

THRISSUR: The Sankaracharya of Kanchi Swamy Jayendra Saraswathi has agreed to set up a `Pilgrim centre' at Chottanikara Bhagavathi Temple run by the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) in Ernakulam district. According to a CDB release here on Friday, the promise was given by the Sankaracharya when the CDB officials met him at the Kanchi Math recently. The centre will provide accommodation to financially backward devotees. The release said the Kanchi Math and the CDB had decided to jointly set up educational institutions. CDB president M.A. Krishnanunni, members K.K. Menon and A.C. Velayudhan, and secretary U. Govindankutty were among those who took part in the discussions. --Staff Reporter

Scouts and Guides centenary

KANNUR: Various functions will be held to celebrate the centenary of the Scouts and Guides here on August 8. The celebration will begin with a rally of Scouts and Guides in the district. K. Sudhakaran, MLA, will inaugurate the function at Municipal High School. Bharat Scouts and Guides district headquarters commissioner K. Muraleedharan said at a press conference on Friday that 60 per cent of schools in the district have Scouts and Guides units. — Staff Reporter

Excise staff association meet begins

PALAKKAD: The three-day state conference of the Kerala State Excise Staff Association began here on Friday with an exhibition of narcotic drugs and plants. K. Basheer, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Ernakulam Zone inaugurated the exhibition. Seminars were held on `social problems of drug abuse,' `Problems of health due to the use of drugs' and `problems of drug addiction and its prevention.' Minister for Excise P.K. `Cashew factories idling'

KOLLAM: General secretary of the Kerala Cashew Workers Congress (KCWC) Palkulangara Haridas said that though there was adequate raw cashew stock, the factories under the public sector Kerala Cashew Development Corporation were lying closed for the past one-and-a-half months. In a statement here on Friday, he said that the situation was pushing the cashew workers to starvation even as the Onam festival was approaching. — Staff Reporter

Tab on internet cafes

KOLLAM: The police will start maintaining vigil over the operations of all internet cafes in the city.

The decision was taken at a meeting called by Kollam SP S. Gopinath and DySP T. Reghunathan Nair with the office-bearers of the residents associations of Kollam city on Friday.

The meeting also took the decision to post traffic wardens at important junctions in the city.
