NEW DELHI: Members of Parliament on Friday condemned the Israeli aggression on Lebanon and demanded that India take the initiative to have international sanctions imposed against Israel. They also wanted New Delhi to suspend purchase of arms from that country. In a memorandum, submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, 86 MPs said their document reflected the opinion of the democratic and peace-loving people of India, who had always stood for peace and fought against imperialism. Expressing solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon, they hoped that the Government would give "due honour" to the opinion of its citizens and take action to have it heard in international forum. "The Israeli aggression is a brazen violation of international law and the Geneva Convention, which prohibits attack on civilians. This war of destruction is a totally unwarranted and disproportionate response to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers," the memorandum said. The signatories included CPI(M) leaders Sitaram Yechury, Brinda Karat and Basudeb Acharia; C. Ramachandraiah and N.P. Durga (Telugu Desam); P.G. Narayanan (AIADMK); Amar Singh (SP); Datta Meghe and Tariq Anwar (NCP). In a separate statement, the CPI(M-L) criticised the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government for "keeping stoic silence over this brutal aggression... and exposing its naked subservience to U.S. imperialism."
