NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday rapped the Union and State Governments for resorting to wasteful expenditure by issuing full/half page advertisements in newspapers on the occasion of the birthday of some political leaders. Pointing out that tax payer's money should not be used for glorification of individuals, a Bench comprising Chief Justice Y. K. Sabharwal, Justice S. H. Kapadia and Justice C. K. Thakkar issued notice to the Centre and all the States, asking them to file their response in six weeks on a petition seeking a direction for framing of guidelines to prevent such wasteful expenditure. The Bench was hearing a petition filed by advocate Manzoor Ali Khan highlighting how the Central and State Governments were spending crores of rupees on advertisements on birthday celebrations of political leaders and to send congratulatory messages. D. K. Garg, counsel for the petitioner, read out the various advertisements and urged the court to lay down proper guidelines.
